It’s not everyday you get to Flamberge!

If you’ve heard of a Flamberge then you’re clearly a well-seasoned cook but if you’re like the majority of us you’re still just trying to pronounce it. The teams here at MFCB have built hundreds of beautiful, custom kitchens over the years but recently we had a first. Our clients Leslie Stack and Frank Rizzo’s kitchen renovation developed the same way Leslie approaches cooking a meal, slowly with layers, adding in details once she could see how the first layers were coming together. Every element in their kitchen was thoughtfully developed, nothing was ever pulled off a shelf. We always try to guide our clients through a renovation process in a way that feels right for them, but this time it was Leslie who lead us. It wasn’t until we were almost finished that we realized this was just the way Leslie creates; layer by layer, ingredient by ingredient. The final “ingredient” to their dream kitchen was a La Cornue Flamberge Rotisserie. It’s an interior wall-mounted, open rotisserie oven that creates the most delicious roasted meats we’ve ever tasted. So now we know and now can say we’ve successfully cooked up another lovely renovation with our very talented client. The Stack Rizzo home kicked off Historic Garden Week in Richmond, VA. We hope you had a chance to see the home and you caught a glimpse of the amazing Flamberge! For more information on a Flamberge please visit, http://www.lacornueusa.com/product/flamberge/

The Downtown YMCA became Richmond Christmas Mother Kathie Markel’s workshop Tuesday morning, complete with eight helpers in holiday-themed headband boppers.

Markel’s helpers, otherwise known as Circle of Friends, have wrapped donated presents for the organization since its program Christmas Connection started 15 years ago.

What once started as an open call for families who could not afford Christmas presents for their children has transformed into an effort aimed at disadvantaged children already in YMCA programs, downtown YMCA executive director David Kunnen said.

This year, instead of presenting gifts to children at their annual holiday event, parents will receive the gifts so their children can open them Christmas Day. This way, Kunnen said, parents will be more involved in the process even though most of the children know the gifts came from YMCA donors.

“Christmas becomes a stressor for these families,” he said. “It’s not going to rob any parents of their dignity.”

Many parents over the years have gone from the sidelines to partnering side-by-side with the YMCA, Kunnen added.

The Downtown YMCA’s Christmas Connection 2013 program started last month in its lobby with more than 100 tags representing children from Woodville, Fox and Holton elementary schools and the organization’s preschool on Main Street on its Christmas tree. There are still 20 more children in need of donations. The children receive a coat, hat or gloves and an item from their wish list.

The Richmond Christmas Mother Fund was established in 1935 by The Richmond News Leader to provide needy children and families with toys, clothing, food and other assistance during the holidays. It later became a joint project with the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

The Richmond Christmas Mother is selected each year as a representative […]

Late this summer the team from MFCB spent 3 days in the Peter Paul neighborhood clearing land and working with team members from Capitol One to install a community garden. We love to see the transformation of green space for a neighborhood to enjoy. Pretty soon pumpkins will be popping up everywhere you look.

Franko – LaFratta Construction, Inc., Receives National and Regional Awards

Franko – LaFratta Construction, Inc. recently received two Chrysalis Awards, both nationally and regionally. Franko – LaFratta took national honors in the “Residential Specialty Feature” category for a custom shelving system installed in a Historic Fan area home, as well as South region honors for the “Bath Remodel” in the highest category for a home on Richmond’s Grove Avenue.
“Winning awards in multiple categories is difficult to do. Not only does this speak to their versatility, but to their commitment to quality on every project,” says Ken Kanline, Director of the Awards. This recognition came recently after Franko – LaFratta received national and local exposure in Restoration Magazine and R-Home Magazine.

Flow With It

Outdoor space flows from one entertaining area to another and captures water views

This is the third outdoor project completed by Franko-LaFratta Construction, Richmond, Va., in the past year, so co-owner Mark Franko is declaring outdoor projects a trend.

Franko says people understand that a recession can be a good time to remodel. He had done an interior project for these homeowners, so when they told him they were considering an outdoor project, his advice was: “If this is your forever house, do now. You’ll get good pricing and get good use out of it.”

The home, on the James River, had limited views and, Franko says, “even worse, no great relationship to the outdoors.” The earlier renovation expanded river views from the foyer through to the living area. For the outdoor project, the clients put together a team that included Franko, architecture firm 3North, which has a landscape division, and a decorator. To create outdoor zones that flow together, the team shared ideas on transitions, furniture size and placement, and the color palette for the best design outcome.
